Author Profile
Jane Heather was born and grew up in Birmingham. After graduating from the University of East Anglia, she went travelling. She still thinks the best year of her life was the one that included six months as a waitress in New York’s East Village and six months as an assistant housekeeper at the Abbey on the island of Iona. After that, she settled in Portugal for seven years, working for the British Council. She now lives in Shropshire, England.
You could almost think you¹re reading a detective novel.
Seventeen-year-old Kezia is found dead in a run-down flat in Birmingham, England, and the police soon have a man in custody awaiting questioning. Except that, on being arrested, he faints dead away, and has to have some deeply unsettling discussions with a psychiatrist before he's allowed anywhere near a police officer...
And except that the suspect's wife has mysteriously fled to a distant Scottish isle - where her daughter is prey to something that may be dream, or projection, or mythic creature from the darker reaches of Celtic folklore: but it still thrusts its way into the "real" world. Whatever it is, it does its best to drag her into its watery realm.
Whose world is real? Kezia¹s diary reveals a life fractured piece by by tiny piece until she is sleepwalking to her own death, while spinning truth, dreams, fictions, and jeopardy into the life of the one man she might have cared about: the chief suspect.
Jane Heather goes beyond the police procedural to explore the inner terrain of characters who lie to one another and to themselves. The detectives find themselves examining the places where the shale slips, where fact and fiction divide and coalesce.
And some further thoughts

Like a number of original FireCrest titles, The Drowned Sister was extremely well received by agents and potential publishers, but repeatedly ran up against the trade's fixation on marketing by genre. Such a strategy is congenitally blind to genuinely innovative writing and, indeed, spawns a fatal preconception: books (and not just novels) are judged primarily in terms of how well they fit an arbitrary marketing label, not on their own terms.
Here's a typical instance of the poisoned praise heaped on The Drowned Sister: "Our reader enjoyed this novel.... He thought the story was very well written, complex and disturbing. It's very readable [but] it was a bit police procedural, a bit psychological thriller, a bit human interest story... Perhaps this mixture of genres was sometimes uneasy... "
Which rather misses the way the interlinked stories are tied together by subtle themes and unobtrusive images to create a dramatic whole. Which is what we call a real novel.
