Publishers and Republishers of Remarkable Original Fiction

NOTES FOR AUTHORS

What we’re after
As noted on our home page, FireCrest Fiction launches in Spring 2007 with new, highly original novels and reprints of some neglected masterworks from the 20th century.

We are now looking for new, unusually imaginative fiction of the kind that falls between the cracks of conglomerate publishers’ pre-ordained genres, arbitrary classifications, and marketing labels.

If you know what a ‘real’ novel is, you’ll already know it’s not ‘literary fiction’, since that's just another marketing label. If you’re writing with at least some idea of keeping the true art of the novel alive, then we’re probably on the same wavelength.

The best routes to get a handle on the kind of thing we are after is to look at our list of current and forthcoming reprints – read them if, heaven forfend, you don’t know them – and at details of our original titles (read them, too!). The next best way is to absorb our prejudices and our pleasures, and our idea of what real novels are like, in the section Books We Love and Books We Hate.

Submitting manuscripts
We’re sorry, but we don’t – yet! – have the resources to read a mountain of ‘unsolicited’ manuscripts, in any form. If your work is worthwhile, a literary agent will take it seriously. If they really take it seriously, but don’t feel they can sell it – or fail to sell it – to a mainstream publisher, there’s a chance they’ll commend it to us. Especially if you remind them that we exist to consider the new, the wayward, the eccentric, the real stuff of proper novels.

We will NOT respond to email or other submissions of entire MSS or lengthy proposals without prior notice and discussion, so please don't clutter our inbox with them.

The first 100 pages, three chapters, or the first part of a novel are usually enough to make a fair judgement. If we like those, we'll ask to see the whole book. When declining a book (which we may do even after reading all of it) we will always give honest reasons why we've done so, but please don't expect a lengthy critique.

Authors – and agents! – should also be aware that we currently offer only small advances against royalties. However, being published for a pittance is better than languishing in complete obscurity. But our distribution system and our extremely devious marketing and promotion strategies should ensure that you will get at least as much exposure as any other ‘new’ novelist, and quite possibly more.
